Summary
Bandarra was born in Trancoso, Beira Alta, a small town in Portugal with a considerable Converso population whom he knew well. A shoemaker by trade, he was also a popular poet whose verses ("trovas"), some of them satirical, were very much appreciated by the masses - among them many of the Conversos. His longing for and expectation of the return of the "concealed king" echoed both the Portuguese myth of redemption by "don Sebastião" and the Jewish Messiah, and was considered dangerous and subversive by the Inquisition. Bandarra was put on trial on charges of Judaizing in 1541; the Inquisition could find no tangible proof of his being of Converso descent, yet he was sentenced to total prohibition of his writing and publishing. He died soon after, in 1545. Includes the trial proceedings and all of Bandarra's verses.
