- Summary
- Who were the Zurich canons in the early and high Middle Ages? Until now, it was largely unknown how the canons' chapters at the two monasteries of Großmünster and Fraumunster were composed. 357 people can be named for the period up to 1316 and are examined prosopographically. In the 13th century, the chapter at Großmünster was made up mostly of citizens, often with relatives on the council, while at Fraumunster the knightly clergy predominated and there were only a few high nobility at both monasteries. People of Zurich descent are given preference when allocating a benage. Disputes about the plebanate in the late 12th century were won by the Großmünster with the election of a chapter and the provost investiture of the people's priest. The present work supplements the material provided by Andreas Meyer ("Zurich und Rom"), 1986): The stock of all medieval Zurich secular clergymen that can be found in the sources has now been processed, preparing the ground for a wide range of further research.
