Summary
  • Dr. Ward's research is of critical importance to those assessing the present and future success of African-American youth. The subjects for Dr. Ward's study are drawn from the Piney Woods School, a boarding school whose mission is to provide excellence in education to students, especially African-American students, from deprived socioeconomic backgrounds. Using multiple regression techniques, Dr. Ward examines the relationship between achievement (ACT scores), gender, socioeconomic status, number of years of schooling, geographic region, and grade point average of at-risk African-American students.
  • This work's surprising conclusions will change the way that many educators and planners now view at-risk elementary and high-school students in both urban and rural America. It speaks to the possibilities of environment and commitment enhancing educational success.
