Summary
Memoirs of a Sephardi Jew, born Moise Levi in 1912, in Aidin, near Izmir. Describes the history and culture of his mother's family, the Algazis, originally from Andalusia, from the expulsion of 1492 until today. Despite improvements in the lot of Jews under Kemal Ataturk, the family emigrated to France in 1924. Settled in Versailles and then Paris, they fled to Pau in 1940, following the Occupation. They were placed under house arrest near Bordeaux, and subsequently went into hiding. Levi was given false papers and attempted to escape to Spain with his cousin, who was arrested and deported. He joined the Resistance, which enabled him to save his brother from deportation. He escaped seven more times before his return to Paris after the liberation, where he lives today.
