Summary
This compact manual is designed to help women make informed decisions, protect themselves in work situations, and cope with a variety of commonplace problems. The authors (Divorce: A Woman's Guide to Getting a Fair Share, Macmillan, 1995) cover domestic issues such as prenuptial agreements, adoptions, and divorce and custody disputes, recognizing the change in the status of women in recent years while acknowledging the difficulties that remain. Here the advice is pointed and hard-nosed, with cautions about what to do legally and how to prepare mentally. Chapters on the workplace discuss employee rights, pregnancy, harassment, the glass ceiling, and alternative work arrangements. The "Working for Yourself" section is about buying an existing business, and there is good discussion of the pitfalls of working with friends or family members. Chapters on dealing with stalkers and scam artists are unusual but timely, and the appendixes are rich with listings for support groups, consumer protection, and government agencies. -Library Journal.
