- Summary
- "Robert Graham, a much-travelled Scottish Whig with estates in Perthshire, paid three visits to Ireland in the 1830s. In 1835 he toured Leinster and Munster, returning in the following year to Connaught and Ulster. He was heir to his cousin, Baron Lynedoch, the Peninsular War hero, who joined him in 1838 to visit the Gore-Booths at Lissadell." "The manuscript journals, now in the National Library of Ireland, were not intended for publication. Through his titled, society and army contacts Graham had entree to government circles and several of the big houses. The journals were written to inform his mother and sisters in Edinburgh. There are frequent comparisons with conditions in Scotland, where the author had experience as a member of two government commissions. His comments on agricultural practices, physical phenomena, architecture, scenery, local administration and popular customs were fresh and informed, and written in an easily readable style."--Jacket
