Summary
The letters describe events in Freiburg from the point of view of a socialist and non-Aryan, including the persecutions to which Vordtriede (b. 1891) and her half-Jewish children were subject. She persuaded her son, who emigrated to Switzerland early in 1933 and later to the U.S., not to return to Germany. She herself crossed the border into Switzerland illegally on 2 September 1939, but there too suffered from antisemitism. Vordtriede tried to help friends who were deported to southern France in October 1940. After her son became an American citizen, he was able to bring her over. The postscript by Bosch (pp. 363-388) traces the story of her life.
