- Summary
- "Selection of photographs from the Joaquín Santamaría collection over 20,000 images. Subject matter ranges from agriculture, politics and sports to family gatherings, architecture, urbanization, business, landscapes and advertisements as well as the succession of ritual events marking major holidays and festivities such as Carnival, Holy Week, the 16th of September and Christmas. The photographs depict catastrophes and accidents as well as the protagonists of lurid crimes and prostitutes. Santamaría recorded the military and naval events, social and official acts constituting an important part of Veracruz' daily life. There are also images depicting the many labor and political meetings and demonstrations; everyday activities in commercial establishments; work on the docks and the arduous tasks of the caulkers in the local shipyards. Sports activities of course, were also included, along with entertainment news. As a free-lance photographer on a commission basis, Santamaría also recorded the life cycles of many of Veracruz' prominent families"--from Joaguín Santamaría by Ignacio Gutiérrez Ruvalcaba (pages 139-140).
