- Summary
- President Yoweri Museveni's National Resisance Movement (NRM) has enjoyed a virtual monopoly on political power in Uganda since 1986. The NRM brought an end to the massive slaughter of civilians during the abusive reigns of Idi Amin and Milton Obote, but has refused to relax its hold on the political arena. The NRM, now renamed "the movement," has demonized independent political parties, allowing them to exist in name but prohibiting them from staging public rallies, opening branch offices, or sponsoring candidates in elections.
