Based on the European Community Labour Force Survey 1992-1997, examines the role of educational qualifications for successful labour market entry in 12 European Union countries. Focuses on unemployment and occupational allocation as two main dimensions of early labour market outcomes. Concludes that institutional differences in education and training systems and in labour markets play a major role in explaining cross-country differences in labour market entry.
