Summary

"Vincent van Gogh originally wanted to become a preacher, just like his father. He first began work as an auxiliary preacher in England, but could not embark on regular training because he did not succeed in passing the necessary examination. He then spent three months training to be an evangelist in Brussels and after that for a short time worked in the mining area in the south of Belgium. He took the gospel so seriously that by identifying with the poverty and wretchedness of the miners he risked damaging his health so the church authorities dismissed him." "By this time (he was twenty-seven), he finally became aware of his vocation as an artist. However, this did not, as is often supposed, represent a radical and absolute break with his Christian faith. Although he broke with institutional Christianity, in the second part of his life, as in the first, he remained an evangelist, in his own distinctive way."--BOOK JACKET.
