Description
1 CD-ROM; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
This CD-ROM contains the texts and concordances of all the extant copies of Historia del cavallero Clamades, originally titled La hystoria del muy valiente y esforçado cauallero Clamades hijo del rey de Castilla e de la linda Clarmonda hija del rey de Tuscana. For reasons of coherence and unity of corpus, only those copies belonging to the original tradition of the text have been included in this collection, a total of 12 printings dating from 1521 to ca. 1770. The story of the Spanish Clamades is a recasting of the "Tale of the Wooden Horse" in the Arabian Nights. The locale is moved from ancient Persia to medieval Spain, and all the characters' names are changed to fit its new setting. The first known version of the adaptation is the lengthy French romance in verse Li Roumans de Cléomadès (1275-80?) by Adenet le Roi, a trouvador from Brabant. At the beginning of his roman, Adenet admits to have received the material from Blanche de France, who reports to have heard it in Spain. How exactly it was transmitted from the Arabian Nights is completely unknown.--Introduction.
