Summary
Considers the causes of the revival of papal activity in the eleventh century, relating changes in socio-economic structures and intellectual cultures to political activities. Finding the relative lack of papal political activity prior to the period studied as being due to the fragmentation of Roman political power, the author argues that the revival of activity was caused by a movement towards structural density in lordship. This is meant both in the sense that the papal court was attempting to control central Italy according to the fashion of a contemporary lord, and in the sense that those who began appealing to the pope during this period did so because of problems associated with the move towards structural density. In particular, it is argued that the various papal actions against bishops and kings were motivated by the desire to remove impediments to the new pope's entry into clerical benefices.
