Summary
Melgaard's work - which is often classified under the label 'trash art' of 'slacker art' - has the tendency to escape every possible categorisation or definition. He employs paintings, drawings, sculptures but also performances, videos, photographs, hand-written texts, silk-screens, textiles and furniture to create his room-filling installations. He can be called a visual narrator as he uses different media to tell a story, which consists of innumerable fragments and is embedded in a personal mythology. Organised chaos is one of the main principles both on the level of composition and content. This catalogue, published to accompany an exhibition, concentrates on Melgaard's exploration of the construction of self identity, delving into the stereotypical iconography of Scandinavian black metal music.
