- Despite anti-Jewish passages in the Qur'an, Muslim dhimma law, while placing restrictions on Jews, also protected them. Antisemitism appeared with the Europeans in the 19th century, but it was Zionist settlement in Palestine, its drive to take over the Palestinians' land, their jobs, and the economy, that really let loose antisemitism, culminating in the pogroms and uprisings of the 1920s-30s, which were directed not only against the Zionists but also, as in Hebron, against non-Zionist Jews. The Arabs, led by the Mufti, Amin al-Husaini, made common cause with the Nazis. After the war, the Arab world was humiliated and traumatized by the establishment of the State of Israel, its victories in successive wars, and its occupation of all of Palestine and above all of the Temple Mount. The "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and other antisemitic publications deriving from European sources became bestsellers. Traces the rise of nationalist and Islamist anti-Zionist and antisemitic organizations (such as the PLO, the Muslim Brethren, Hizballah, and Hamas) in the occupied territories and in the Arab countries. Comments that Arab antisemitism was influenced successively by Nazi, then by communist, and finally by Islamist ideology, but could adjust to all these while remaining essentially the same.
