Summary
Two apologies for Pius XII regarding his attitude toward the Jews during World War II. Pt. 1 (pp. 13-143), "Pío XII y la cuestión judía", by Schenck Sanchís, reports cases in which the pope tried to help the Jews by encouraging concrete actions of the Catholic Church in Europe and South America, through personal intervention, letters, declarations, and even protests. In pt. 2 (pp. 147-242), "Pío XII, defensor de los judíos", Cárcel Ortí asserts that the reason for the lack of public denunciation and condemnation of Nazi racism by the pope was his fear of causing more damage to the Church, to Christians, and to Jews. He preferred to act quietly, doing what he could to help the Jews, without concern for his own image and future judgment on his actions.
