Summary
Memoirs of an Italian Jew, relating his experiences during World War II. Fiorentino was born in Rome in 1923. In September 1943, when the Nazis began to raid Jewish houses in the city, he, his parents, and his four sisters went into hiding, some with Christian friends and some in a convent. Fiorentino, while visiting the family's apartment looking for books, was arrested by agents of the Italian Public Security. He was sent to the Fossoli di Carpi transit camp and then delivered to the Nazis, who deported him to Auschwitz. Later he was transferred to several other camps, including Stutthof, Waldingen, and Dachau. In February 1945 he was sent on a death march and liberated near Innsbruck. After the war he returned to Rome and was reunited with his family.
