Summary
"Pandemic: Facing AIDS presents images of the forty-two million women, children, and men around the world who live with the disease that defines this century. It presents the scope of the pandemic, the different cultural and national responses to it, and it puts a human face on the disease of a severity not seen since the Bubonic Plague in the fourteenth century. An overview of the global strategy to address the problem that has killed twenty-five million people worldwide, it includes images of AIDS that have themselves been part of the defining face of the disease. In 2002 alone, over five million people were newly infected, and at the dawn of a new millennium, AIDS threatens political and economic stability globally, hindering development and causing terrible human suffering. But there have been victories, and more are possible. Countries like Uganda have encouraged education and outreach which have markedly dropped the rate of infection and improved life for those already infected. Thailand has sponsored information and care for women and children that has helped stem the tide. Brazil has advocated strongly for affordable pharmaceutical and health treatment for its citizens. With education and resources, the world's AIDS crisis is solvable - if the will to do so is there."--BOOK JACKET.
