Summary
Pp. 31-142 contain a collection of 150 letters, written in 1938-41 by Gustav and Helene Loeb, owners of a warehouse in Vlotho, to their son, Hans, who had emigrated in 1938 to the USA. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom their warehouse was looted. Gustav Loeb was arrested and interned briefly in Buchenwald. After the warehouse was Aryanized in January 1939, the couple and their daughter moved to Hannover. They decided to emigrate, but failed to obtain visas. The daughter, Marianne, died of scarlet fever in August 1941 in the Berlin Jewish hospital, where she worked as a nurse. In September 1941 the Loebs were moved into a "Jewish house"; in December they were deported to Riga, the correspondence ended, and their fate is unknown. Pp. 142-171 discuss the background and political views of the Loeb family. Pp. 174-215 contain further information on the Loeb family, mainly from letters and speeches by their son, Stephen Hans Loeb.
