Summary
Memoirs of a Jew, born in 1923 in Strasbourg to an Orthodox family. In 1940 the family found refuge in Toulouse; two years later Nisand joined the resistance and was appointed by the chief rabbi as a chaplain for Jewish children hidden in Christian institutions. In 1943 he became chaplain of the Jews in the internment camps in southwestern France and in the Saint-Michel prison in Toulouse. He established contact between inmates and their families, as well as with Jewish welfare organizations and self-defense networks. Describes the conditions in the camps of Gurs and Noé, from which Nisand helped two men escape. After all the camp inmates were deported in May 1944, Nisand joined the armed Jewish resistance in Vabre, participating in the liberation of the garrison town of Castres. His family survived in hiding.
