Summary
Memoirs of a Jew born in 1926 in Nürnberg, amplified with historical information. Pp. 13-27 deal with the antisemitic climate in Nürnberg in the 1920s-early 1930s, and the effect Julius Streicher's presence had on the city. In 1933, the Thalmann family left Germany and settled in Dijon, France, after a year in Switzerland. Pp. 69-150 deal with Thalmann's experiences in the Shoah. In 1942 her father and brother left occupied France for Grenoble, while Thalmann stayed behind to be with her mother who was hospitalized. Twice Thalmann avoided arrest, and then decided to flee. She managed to reach Switzerland, where she was joined by her brother. In 1943 her father was arrested and deported; her mother died in the hospital. After the war Thalmann returned to France. She later became a historian of the Holocaust period.
