In 1933, the Thalmann family left Germany and settled in Dijon, France, after a year in Switzerland. Pp. 69-150 deal with Thalmann's experiences in the Shoah. In 1942 her father and brother left occupied France for Grenoble, while Thalmann stayed behind to be with her mother who was hospitalized. Twice Thalmann avoided arrest, and then decided to flee.
