Summary
After tracing the history of antisemitism and of the theory of the Jewish conspiracy, analyzes antisemitic discourse in contemporary Germany, mainly on the Internet but also in articles and books. This discourse focuses on Zionist or joint Zionist-U.S. conspiracies behind the attack on the World Trade Center, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the American war on Iraq. For each of these themes, discusses many examples and then analyzes one of them in detail. (The texts of these appear in the appendix, pp. 197-207.) Points to typical patterns of thought and vocabulary, and the use of stereotypes such as the "power-hungry Jew" (who aspires to domination over Palestine, the Middle East, finally the world) or the "over-sensitive Jew" (who sees every criticism as antisemitic). Conspiracy theories are rife not only in the radical right, the anti-globalist and anti-American Left, and Islamism, but also in the mainstream. By denigrating Israel, Germans free themselves of guilt for their own past crimes.
