Summary
An excerpt from a manuscript written by Kornis in 2002-03. He was born in Romania in 1917. The excerpt deals with the period between 1942-44, from his arrest until his liberation. Kornis was deported to the camp in Vapnyarka, to where only Jews were sent, altough many, like Kornis, were arrested for anti-fascist activities. Describes life in the camp, which differed from German concentration camps only when it came to methods, not the aim, which was extermination of the Jews. In Vapnyarka the inmates were killed, or at least paralyzed, by having to eat poisonous legumes, unfit for human consumption. In winter 1942-43, the inmates brought about a change in the diet through a hunger strike. Shortly thereafter, Kornis was transferred to the ghetto in Olgopol, where he remained for seven months. In January 1944, he was sent to the labor camp in Lucareti. He remained there until liberation by the Red Army in August 1944.
