- Summary
- "This work is a catalogue raisonne of all the works (some 1100) attributed to the eleventh-century Byzantine polymath, Michael Psellos. The form of the catalogue is based partly on the contents of the volumes of Psellos' works as they have appeared in the Bibliotheca Teubneriana. Each work has a consecutive running number as well as an "internal number" for that section, viz., letters, theological works, philosophical works, etc." "Each entry has the lemma of the work taken from the manuscript; the incipit and desinit; a listing in chronological order of all printed editions (beginning in 1497, down to the year 2000) and translations of the work; then a complete bibliography for each work; and finally a listing by city, library, fonds and manuscript where each work is found (some 1790 manuscripts are cited)." "The catalogue has a complete and exhaustive bibliography of all editions, translations, and works relevant to Psellos - numbering some 1300 items. As well, there is a concordance between the numbering in this catalogue and the numbering of items in the standard printed editions; a list of all addressees of the letters, orations, etc.; an alphabetical list of initia; and a complete index of manuscripts cited." "Prior to this work there has existed no overall catalogue of Psellos' works. Nor did there exist anything even approaching a complete Psellan bibliography. At the moment there has not even been a single study of the life, works or importance of Michael Psellos. This catalogue fills several of these gaps and lays the basis for all future work on this very important polymath."--BOOK JACKET.
