Summary
The Deans of the English cathedrals have included in their number many engaging - and eccentric - characters. In this volume Trevor Beeson, himself a former Dean, provides portraits of the most interesting and significant of them in the 19th and 20th centuries. William Buckland, an early geologist and student of animal life, offered his guests battered mice for breakfast and giraffe skulls for dinner; Reynolds Hole popularised the growing of roses and founded the National Rose Society; Frederick Farrar wrote a best-selling schoolboy story; Ralph Inge, a gloomy philosopher, hated church music; Walter Matthews saved St. Paul's during the wartime Blitz; Hewlett Johnson, the "Red Dean", admired Stalin's Russia; Derrick Walters was a key figure in the recent urban regeneration of Liverpool. Trevor Beeson also traces the history of cathedral life from its earliest days and offers some outspoken opinions about its role in a church renewed for mission.
