- Summary
- "In Wings of War, military historian Peter Harclerode recounts the complete story of airborne warfare operations to a detail never before accomplished. Beginning with the early days of experiment and development by the Italians, Germans and Soviets during the 1930s, he takes us into the successful German operations in Norway and the Low Countries in 1940, and then the massive 1941 German invasion of Crete, which saw heavy losses inflicted on the Luftwaffe's newly formed airborne arm. Airborne operations in Russia, the formation of British and American airborne forces and their operations in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and on to Greece and Normandy, are all fully chronicled and analysed in a comprehensive narrative account. The disastrous Operation Market Garden at Arnhem in September 1944 is closely examined virtually hour-by-hour, as are the German operations in the Ardennes and the subsequent Allied airborne assault on the Rhine. Equally well covered in the concluding chapter are the Japanese and Allied airborne operations in Asia and the Pacific."--BOOK JACKET.
