Summary
In the visual arts, the term 'realism' refers to a style of depiction which is close to reality. Objective reality is critically reproduced, and in the process the chief features of the reality so depicted - proportion, dimensionality, colour, light - are retained, thereby linking the representation to its interpretation. This work introduces the reader to various realistic styles which have arisen in the last 150 years: Classic Realism, New Objectivity, American Realism, Nouveau Realisme, Socialist Realism, and Photorealism.
