- Summary
- Traces the lineage of the Dinís clan, New Christians from Portugal who arrived in Pontevedra (Galicia) in 1562. They escaped from the persecution of the Inquisition in Portugal, which was established in 1547. Various members of the family were physicians, lawyers, and merchants. Some of them reached high positions in Galicia as tax collectors and clergymen of the Catholic Church, and a few were even granted aristocratic titles. The Inquisition in Galicia, established in 1574, focused during the 16th century on the persecution of supporters of the Reformation, and this fact facilitated the success of the Portuguese Conversos. However, from the beginning of the 17th century, their social rise sharpened the hostility of Old Christians in social, religious, and political spheres. The first denunciation of New Christians took place already in 1595, and it was followed by others. In 1619 members of the Dinís clan were denounced as judaizers. Many of them were able to escape from Galicia, but some were detained, prosecuted, and punished in varying degrees.
