Summary
Traces the fate of Jews from the Berlin suburb of Schöneiche during the Holocaust. Based on interviews with survivors, family members, and non-Jewish neighbors, presents portraits of some of the community's ca. 170 Jews, showing how the lives of these well-integrated, and often converted, Jews were affected by Nazi persecution. Ca. one-fourth of the Jews emigrated between 1933-39; others were deported or went into hiding. Discusses the survivors' laborious efforts after the war to receive compensation for their Aryanized property. The situation was aggravated by the fact that Schöneiche became part of the Soviet occupation zone and then of the DDR, which did not hold itself accountable for crimes committed by the Nazis. In addition, the Jews who returned were suspected of being Western or Zionist agents.
