- Summary
- Over the past decade, china's relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and ASEAN have changed substantially. For much of the postwar period, Southeast Asian countries saw China as a source of threat. Today, the picture could hardly be more different. Allowing for the considerable diversity that exists in its relations with each individual Southeast Asian country, China has now assumed a position as the paramount regional power. This Lowy Institute Paper describes how this transformation came about and reflects on contemporary Southeast Asian attitudes towards China.
