Summary
"Kerstin Kartscher is the third artist to participate in the Tate St. Ives Artist Residency Programme based at the Porthmeor Studios in St. Ives. Relocating from London to St. Ives in October 2004, during the last twelve months Kartscher, whilst participating in several national and international projects, has evolved a new body of work to show in Gallery 5. Born in 1966 in Nuremberg, Germany, Kartscher's work portrays visionary worlds which question contemporary freedoms. In realms where social, emotional and psychological constraints have mutated, elegant female protagonists celebrate their femininity within fantastical and immense landscapes. The narrative unfolds from flowing graphic lines in marker ink on paper or fabric, and fragments of historic and contemporary imagery in disparate styles combine to create an exotic meeting place of past, present and future. Kartscher's seductive drawings have previously been adorned with significant accessories such as gilded chains or formed the surface of objects such as boudoir screens or awnings. Possible furnishings for the women in the drawings, Kartscher has made an installation of objects based around a canvas canopy in the gallery at Tate St. Ives, creating a dialogue with her latest suite of works on paper."--BOOK JACKET.
