Summary
Discusses the Inquisition's persecution of Conversos in Mallorca during the 17th century. The general economic crisis in Spain at that time resulted in an increase in popular hatred of Conversos, who enjoyed a higher standard of living than the rest of the population. The Xuetas were financially very strong and influential in the Mallorcan economy, a fact that facilitated their secret practice of Judaism. Pressure from the populace led the Inquisition to give up its relative tolerance of Conversos and to initiate, from 1670 onward, a policy of persecution. A series of detentions and trials ensued during the next twenty years. Many prison and death sentences were pronounced. The expropriation of wealthy Conversos became the most important source of income for the Inquisition, and immense amounts of Converso assets were transferred to the Spanish Crown. The progressive disappearance of the Xuetas as functionaries in the economy engendered a worsening of the economic situation, resulting again in an increase in hatred amongst the populace and in further persecution by the Inquisition. This vicious circle came to a head in the auto-da-fé of 1691. After 1691, Crypto-Judaism disappeared almost completely from Mallorca and the Xuetas lost their economic importance.
