Summary
"Emblems of Desire is a representative selection of lyrics drawn from the 449 dizains that make up Maurice Sceve's book-length cycle of poems known as the Delie, first published in 1544. Often considered a sixteenth-century Mallarme because of the radiant obscurity of his verse, Sceve emerges in these translations as a poet whose wry love poetry also makes him a contemporary of such English metaphysicals as Donne or of a postmodern master of obliqueness like Ashbery. This edition includes the fifty allegorical woodcuts that illustrated the original edition. The interplay of the poems and their visual emblems adds further ironic resonance to this echo chamber in which self and other hear only their own misdirected desires."--book jacket.
