Summary
Discusses the attempts of Schonfeld as executive director of the Chief Rabbi's Religious Emergency Committee, headed by Chief Rabbi Hertz, to help European Jews under Hitler and who fled from him. Like others, the leaders of British Orthodox Jewry knew about the ongoing genocide of Europe's Jews by 1942. One barrier to action by secular as well as religious Jews, was domestic antisemitism - potential, latent, and actual. The main obstacle to rescue was the British's government's opposition to helping Jews caught up in the war, including in regard to refuge in Palestine. British isolation also hampered possible relief efforts. Schonfeld succeeded mainly in helping Jews who had reached Britain and in planning for the rehabilitation of Jewish survivors after the war. Until early in the war he concentrated on trying to help Orthodox Jews, especially rabbis and Talmud scholars, but then he tried to help any Jew he could. Orthodox lay people were involved in some relief projects and in days of prayer and fast days organized by Schonfeld and others.
