- Summary
- "During his nine years of incarceration in mental asylums, magic seemed to have lost its role as source of illumination and transformation to become demonic and persecutory: the realm of the army of spectres and vampires which Antonin Artaud believed were sucking the vitality from his mind and body." "Between 1946 and 1948, Artaud set down in a series of little exercise books some traces of his own struggles to escape a hell which extended far beyond the walls of asylums and the sorcerers who ran them. Eleven of the books are filled with fragments of writing and extraordinary sketches: totemic figures, pierced bodies, enigmatic machines, sometimes drawn with a trembling hand, more often built up from firm pencil strokes that erase one form as they create another." "In January 1948, two months before his death, he took a twelfth exercise book and wrote a remarkable, incantatory text to accompany them, '50 Drawings to Murder Magic'. It was the last text he wrote."--BOOK JACKET.
