Summary
Traces and anlyzes debates on the causes of antisemitism, its development internationally compared with Germany before 1933, the relation between Nazism and antisemitism, and the role of antisemitism in contemporary Europe and in the Islamic world. Argues that, for all researchers who deal with antisemitism after 1945, the question of the cause of the Nazi annihilation of European Jewry is a central impetus. Thus, controversies on antisemitism have been particularly sharp and have led to an isolated examination of antisemitic attitudes and acts which disclaim a comparison with other attitudes. In this context, emphasizes the uniqueness of the Holocaust. While during the 1960s historical research was oriented toward antisemitic ideology, during the 1970s the focus was on antisemitic parties and organizations, and during the 1980s on the analysis of cultural (especially linguistic and symbolic) forms of expression. Emphasizes the increasing interest of non-Jewish scholars in research of antisemitism since the 1990s.
