Summary
Between 1939-45 Dieulefit, a mainly Huguenot village of 2,500 inhabitants in the Drôme region, almost doubled its population when it turned into a safe haven for Jewish and political refugees. The school in neighboring Beauvallon welcomed Jewish children and rescued them from the Nazis. The two school mistresses, Marguerite Soubeyran and Catherine Krafft, as well as the secretary of the municipality in Dieulefit, Jeanne Barnier, who helped refugees by producing false IDs, were recognized as Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem in the 1960s. Not a single Jew was arrested in Dieulefit during the Shoah.
