Summary
"This book provides a survey of Catholic Northern Netherlandish history painting during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, against the background of a rich Counter Reformation culture which flourished in the Protestant-ruled country. Above the altars and along the walls of these hidden churches, ambitious monumental paintings appeared, depicting biblical themes and devout tales. They were mostly created by prominent artists who also supported the Catholic faith themselves, like Abraham Bloemaert from Utrecht, Pieter de Grebber from Haarlem and Jacob de Wit from Amsterdam." "The devotional and church political preferences of the patrons get as much attention as the ambitions of the artists. Apart from that, the context of the church interior, with its statues, altars, silver and religious garments is examined in detail. And of course, the effects of restrictions in religious freedom on decorational possibilities are discussed."--Jacket.
