Summary
Guthart traces the fate of her maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as an aunt, who were killed in Poland during the Shoah. The story is based on letters sent by these family members (Jozef and Chaîa Zarecki, Abraham and Bronia Gutharc, and Paulina Zarecka) from Łódź, Lublin, the Warsaw ghetto, and the Maidan Tatarski ghetto to Guthart's parents in France between 1938-42. Josef Zarecki was born in Lublin and died there in 1944; his wife, also originally from Lublin, was killed in Maidanek. Abraham Gutharc was born in Piotrikow and killed in Warsaw in 1942, as was his wife, who was born in Łódź. Paulina Zarecka was born in Łódź and perished in Warsaw in 1941. Guthart's parents, Alexander and Bela Guthart, survived the war in hiding in southern France.
