Summary
"This major work fills an important gap by presenting for the first time all of the projects, realizations and texts related to architecture by this trained engineer, one of Le Corbusier's closest assistants for 12 years. The material is presented and commented by Sharon Kanach who shared the rediscovery of this mostly-unpublished material with the composer as his last ambitious project. The material of Music and Architecture is presented under four main headings: The Le Corbusier Year, Xenakis as Independent Architect, Writings on Architecture, The Polytopes. Three major annexes will include: an up to date "Commented Bibliography of Writings By and On Xenakis" by Makis Solomos, a "Critical Index of Xenakis's Architecture" by Sven Sterken, plus a "Comparative Chronology of Xenakis's Life and Work" by Sharon Kanach. The latter's commentary throughout the book strives to bridge the reciprocal influences between music and architecture hidden or apparent in Xenakis œuvre. Music and Architecture represents the first volume in a series of critical editions of Xenakis's writings, a project currently under taken by Sharon Kanach, Makis Solomos, and Benoît Gibson, three leading Xenakis scholars, in collaboration with the Xenakis family and the Bibliothéque nationale de France in Paris (depository of the Xenakis Archives). At least five subsequent volumes will be published in the ew Pendragon Xenakis Series, dedicated to Xenakis's own writings as well as to related scholarly research by others. Our two previous Xenakis volumes - Arts/Sciences: Alloys (1985) and the Pendragon Revised Edition of his seminal Formalized Music (1992) -will be moved into this series." --
