Summary
Relates the rescue activities of Otto Weidt (1883-1947), who employed blind and deaf persons in his brush factory in Berlin (he, too, was almost completely blind). Between 1940-43, he staffed the factory with many Jews, and also hid Jews who were not blind or deaf. Weidt supplied his protégés with food and clothing, and helped them evade deportation. However, in February 1943 most of the employees were arrested during a large roundup and deported. Weidt then sent parcels with provisions to Theresienstadt. Deutschkron, who was employed in Weidt's factory, found a hide-out, together with her mother, through Weidt. He helped several others find hiding places as well, but they were betrayed and deported to Auschwitz. Weidt travelled to Auschwitz and left money and clothes for a woman protégée with whom he was romantically involved, and after her escape and return to Berlin he provided her with a new hiding place. Weidt was recognized after his death as a Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem. Pp. 60-91 contain photographs, facsimiles of documents, and information on some of the rescued Jews. Pp. 93-118 contain a chronological chart of the policy toward Jews of the Nazi regime from 1933-45.
