- Summary
- "This book stands alone as the first general survey of lighting in early Byzantium. Although relatively well known to specialists, Byzantine lighting devices have been presented and discussed usually in connection with other works of Byzantine art, and they have not been treated at great length. The first part of this book discusses the technology and types of lighting devices, and explains their decorative symbolism and social function. The second half illustrates this narrative by drawing from the only exhibition ever held devoted exclusively to Byzantine lighting devices. Lighting in Early Byzantium presents to the public a selection of the finest surviving early Byzantine lighting devices, some of which appear in print here for the first time."--BOOK JACKET.
