Summary
"Alfred Sisley (1839-1899), although born and raised in France, was from a wealthy English family and maintained links with his ancestral homeland all his life. In 1874, after his participation in the now-infamous first Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, he stayed in London, where he painted classically Impressionistic studies of summer life along the River Thames." "When Sisley returned to Britain in 1897, he made a short visit to South Wales. He was entralled by the dramatic shoreline, and the paintings resulting from this trip were among the most audacious and vivid he had ever produced." "Alfred Sisley was best known for his distinctive Impressionist treatment of landscape and this book brings together a rarely seen collection of fresh and appealing studies of the banks of the River Thames, Hampton Court and South Wales."--Jacket.
