- Summary
- "An investigation into the problem of art and matter in the work of Nikolai Gogol, and, indirectly, into the Neoplatonic tradition in Russian literature, Phantasms of Matter constitutes a rigorous examination of Gogol's "image of matter," as well as an attempt to enumerate the rules of its construction. After developing an artistic language corresponding to the Neoplatonic discourse on matter, Gogol subsequently abandoned literature; yet this transposition of the Neoplatonic problem has recurred frequently in Russian and Slavonic literature following his death. Michal Oklot therefore extends this investigation into the work of the Polish author Witold Gombrowicz, allowing unique parallels to be drawn between the writings of these two giants of world literature."--BOOK JACKET.
