  • The letters in this volume were written from, or were about, Port Essington from its formation in 1838 until 1845. Port Essington (1838-1849) was the third British attempt to establish a permanent presence on Australia's northern coastline in the second quarter of the nineteenth century and followed earlier attempts at Melville Island (1824-1828) and Raffles Bay (1827-1829).
