Summary
In 1774 the municipality of Palma de Majorca sent a memorandum signed by prosecutor Miquel Gaietà Soler to the King of Spain, Carlos III, imbued with anti-Jewish stereotypes and accusations (among them, Judaizing), describing the Xuetas (descendants of Conversos who suffered from discrimination) as a social danger. The local Church and university also sent anti-Xueta memorandums. The Council of Castile, however, recommended to put an end to the discrimination, in a report of March 1775, and the king eventually ratified the granting of equal rights on 10 December 1783. Argues that the Xueta tailor of the king, Rafel Cortès, was instrumental to this decision. also recalls a case of "induced" conversion in the person of Carlos Colnix in 1783, and gives the text of the last royal decree barring the entry of the Jews into Spain in 1802.
