Summary
From his seat in Xanadu, the great Mongol emperor of China, Khubilai Khan, had long plotted an invasion of Japan. However, it was only with the acquisition of Korea that the Khan gained the naval resources necessary for such a major amphibious operation. The invasion of 1274 saw the great warriors of the steppes achieve initial successes before their invasion fleet was scattered by a storm. They returned to mount a second invasion in 1281, having spent the intervening years building up their forces, but they were unable to consolidate a landing and as much as 90 per cent of the force was destroyed by a typhoon, the famous kamikaze. This account charts the successes and failures of both campaigns, and is illustrated throughout with maps and original artwork.
