- Summary
- Memoirs of a Jew born in Wuppertal-Elberfeld in 1929 to a family of Polish emigrants. In 1939 Korn and his sister were smuggled out from Germany to join their father, who had fled to Belgium earlier. After their mother joined the rest of the family, they lived illegally in Brussels until 1942, when roundups of Jews began. The Korns split up and the children were sent to a home in Ottignies, "Le Joli Coin", run by the antisemitic Renée Jacqmotte, who nevertheless rescued the lives of several Jewish children. Influenced by Jacqmotte, Korn converted to Catholicism. In October 1944 he and his sister were reunited with their parents in Brussels; the family emigrated to Australia in 1950.
