- Summary
- Aan het eind van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw trokken veel Amerikaanse kunstenaars naar Nederland. Aangetrokken door de idylle van het Hollandse platteland, de rijke traditie van de Gouden Eeuw en het voorbeeld van de Haagse School vestigden zij zich in kunstenaarskolonies als Laren, Katwijk, Egmond, Rijsoord en Volendam. Het werk dat zij hier maakten is doordrenkt van een nostalgisch verlangen naar een pre-stedelijk en preindustrieel tijdperk, vol verwijzingen naar de Nederlandse invloed op de (koloniale) Amerikaanse geschiedenis en de waarden en deugden die de Hollanders in hun ogen vertegenwoordigden. De publicatie vestigt de aandacht op het grote effect van de Nederlandse schilderkunst, cultuur en geschiedenis op de Amerikaanse kunst rond 1900, de zogenoemde Holland Mania. De wijze waarop Amerikaanse kunstenaars Nederland hebben verbeeld is bij het grote publiek nagenoeg onbekend. Exhibition: Singer Laren (17.9.2010-16.1.2011).
