- Summary
- The colour woodblock prints of Kitagawa Utamaro (1753?-1806) have all the ingredients of an up-to-date urbane art, from contemporary chic to scandalous glamour. His striking designs showcse beautiful women and occasionally handsome men, the passion of couples and the pleasures of life in the floating world of the metropolis Edo, Japan's present-day Tokyo. The sensuous depictions of women from all walks of life from courtesans and other denizens of the urban pleasure quaters- the "It-girls" of the late 18th to early 19th century- to wives and mothers create a veritable hymn to female beauty.
